Ojha Institute of Chest Diseases


The OJHA INSTITUTE OF CHEST DISEASES (OICD) is the one of the three constituent institutes of the DUHS, since the University’s inception in December 2003.It was established as a TB sanatorium in 1939 in the form of 05 cottages by the family of Mr. Deep Chand Ojha, who was a well-known physiotherapist and whose donated his property for the relief of TB patients. It was extended to 65 Huts in 1942 by the AYUVEDIC TB relief association. During 1962-67, the Main Building of the Hospital was constructed with full facilities and bed strength of 350 beds. In 1973, it was upgraded from Sanatorium to Ojha Institute of Chest Diseases, as it is referred to today.

Overview


The Ojha Institute of Chest Diseases (OICD) an integral institute of the Dow University of Health Sciences (DUHS), since its evolution in December 2003. It is a well, renowned Centre of Excellence for Tuberculosis by World Health Organization (WHO).  

The Ojha Institute of Chest Diseases (OICD) comprises of a 248-bedded hospital with five affiliated chest clinics.1-Malir Chest Clinic. 2- Liari Chest Clinic. 3-Nazimabad Chest Clinic. 4- Iqbalyaad Chest Clinic. 5- MDR-TB Clinic. Out of which the latter two are located within the DUHS Ojha sub-campus and the other three in various districts of Karachi. All diagnostic and therapeutic services are provided free of cost for both enrolled as well as out-patients. The hospital consists of three wards which include Pulmonology, Drug-resistant tuberculosis as well as Thoracic surgery. The Pulmonology ward is well equipped with advance facilities to diagnose and manage all types of chest diseases. The thoracic ward has a proficient team of thoracic surgeons available to provide medical assistance to patients arriving from the regions of Sindh and Balochistan provinces. It has medical as well as surgical ICUs. The laboratory of OICD is the designated as the “Provincial reference laboratory”.

The institute offers three approved postgraduate programs:

FCPS (Pulmonology) ,MD (Pulmonology) for tuberculosis and Diploma in Tuberculosis and Chest Diseases (DTCD).

Over the period of years the Institute has been elemental in providing proper diagnosis and management of tuberculosis for both drug-sensitive as well as resistant types. Additionally, it is working in partnership with Provincial & National TB control program. The Institute comprises of two new departments Research Department which is involved in various collaborative research with national as well as international researchers and Infectious Diseases Department which is responsible for Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) measures and anti-biotic  stewardship for the entire healthcare facility.

Tailored vocational training programs such as candle making, embroidery, and sewing clothes have been specifically created and implemented for patients with extended stays.Our institute boasts a remarkable and committed faculty, delivering high-quality services in both educational and research endeavors. Their efforts are aimed at nurturing our trainees, molding them into genuine professionals. Throughout the past fifty years, the institute has successfully trained numerous postgraduate students, who now contribute their services not only within Pakistan but also across several Gulf states.

Our Pulmonology Department has achieved a status of excellence in managing pulmonary ailments, distinguished by the availability of advanced diagnostic techniques including Video Bronchoscopy featuring endobronchial and transbronchial biopsies, Closed Percutaneous Pleural Biopsies, Tube Thoracostomies, Pleurodesis, Ultrasound Chest,CT Chest and Spirometry.

Our institution also takes on the responsibility of educating future medical professionals. Lectures are delivered to undergraduate students pursuing MBBS, BDS, as well as those on the path to becoming Medical Technologists and Respiratory Therapists. Various trainings for revised guidelines are also facilitated for healthcare providers as well as staff from time to time.
