The National Institute of Solid Organ & Tissue Transplantation (NISOTT), Dow University of Health Sciences was established in 2016 for providing quality healthcare services, including all solid organ as well tissue transplantation, at a very affordable cost for the poor people of Pakistan to be benefited. The establishment of NISOTT is based on a theme of non-profitable institute with state of the art facilitation.

Kidney Diseases in Pakistan

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a worldwide public health issue associated with premature mortality, decreased quality of life, and increased health-care expenditures. Untreated chronic kidney disease can result in end-stage renal disease and necessitates dialysis or kidney transplantation. In the developing countries, there is a rising incidence and prevalence of kidney failure with poor outcomes and high costs. We at DUHS Renal Transplant provide hope for those patients as a healthy kidney is a necessity for health living.

However sadly, with the ever increasing prevalence of self-medication, medical quackery, and increasing chronic diseases, long term kidney disease is at an all-time high. More and more are succumbing to this disease, which is commonly referred to as Chronic Kidney Disease, or kidney failure.

The most common cause of renal failure is diabetes, hypertension, glomerulonephritis stone disease, hereditary diseases of kidney, and polycystic disease. With the rampant increase of the patient’s negligence to treatment and precautions with regards to diabetes and hypertension, we are now seeing cases of renal disease, and it is very likely these figures will rise in the near future. Another harsh reality is that due to financial restrictions and illiteracy, patients are usually found to visit a kidney specialist late in the course of the disease, rather than earlier.

The incidence and prevalence of End Stage Renal Diseases (ESRD) is continuously raising, and the estimated incidence of (ESRD) in Pakistan is 100 per million populations. Only few patients receive definitive treatment and mostly expire either without treatment or are unable to afford treatment. The cheaper and better treatment of ESRD is renal transplantation, but unfortunately, our country has very few well established transplantation centers.
