Ojha Institute of Chest Diseases

The OJHA INSTITUTE OF CHEST DISEASES (OICD) is the one of the three constituent institutes of the DUHS, since the University’s inception in December 2003.It was established as a TB sanatorium in 1939 in the form of 05 cottages by the family of Mr. Deep Chand Ojha, who was a well-known physiotherapist and whose donated his property for the relief of TB patients. It was extended to 65 Huts in 1942 by the AYUVEDIC TB relief association. During 1962-67, the Main Building of the Hospital was constructed with full facilities and bed strength of 350 beds. In 1973, it was upgraded from Sanatorium to Ojha Institute of Chest Diseases, as it is referred to today.

Academic Programs

Postgraduate Training Programs

  •   Diploma in Tuberculosis and Chest Diseases (2 years higher diploma course).
  •   FCPS in Pulmonology (3 years training after FCPS Part-1 and basic 2 years general medicine training).
  •   Doctor of Medicines (MD) Pulmonology, a five years University based program.
  •   Doctor of Surgery (MS) thoracic surgery; another university based five years program is in the pipeline. Currently thoracic surgery department is providing postgraduate training to on rotation    postgraduates.
  •  TB DOTS Training
  •  MDR Training

  • One year Nursing Assistant Program.
  • Basic Short Courses on Infection Control.
  • Basic Nursing Skill Refresher Courses.
  • Internship for BSc Nursing Generic.

  • Refresher Courses in Sputum Microscopy.
  • Biosafety Training Programs for Hospital Staff.
  • Providestraining to on rotation trainees of Medical Technology.
  • Basic training for Sputum Microscopy.

    • Epidemiology and Biostatistics.
    • Clinical Microbiology.
    • Molecular Biology.
    • Management.

Ojha laboratory also works as Provincial Reference Laboratory.

Vocational Training Programs

Started 2010, under the direction of Vice Chancellor Dow University of Health Sciences, Karachi and with the financial support of philanthropists, the Vocational training programs for patients, attendants and their family members include:

  • Izarban Making.
  • Embroidery.
  • Candle Making.
  • Glass painting.
  • Mehndi designs.
  • Flower making.
  • Stitching and Knitting.

Since 2010 to 2014, 4850 patients and attendants have been trained in DVTC.

Pharmacy Training & Opportunities

OICD provides training opportunities to pharmacy students of various universities along with orientation lectures, pharmacy procedures, and pharmacovigilance. Refresher courses for technical staff regarding pharmacy and drug dosage are also conducted through the OJHA Institute of Chest Diseases
