Dow Institute for Advanced Biological and Animal Research supplies laboratory animals to undergraduate and post-graduate students and departments of DUHS and other universities/research institutes/ Labs for the assistance of their academic plans and research proposals. The facility provides adequate experimental place and the required conditions under controlled environment to carry out projects with the necessary infrastructure for obtaining biological samples. Technical help and availability of the trained personnel facilitates and support the animal handling procedures under strict guidance. Animal house facility also provides commercial services for the preclinical testing and toxicity screening of drugs of Pharmaceutical industries at the standard protocols.

Central Animal House Facility

Central animal house have different general purpose animal species, procedure and research facilities. The department has well maintained and productive rodents breeding and stock facility. There are 47 well-constructed stables for horses, four frog ponds, and separate sheep, monkey and snake houses. Daily monitoring of breeding, stock, quarantine and experimental animals practice are recorded through a qualified veterinarian and trained technical staff.

Advanced Animal House Facility and Research Laboratory

The Laboratory Animal Sciences and Advanced Animal House Facility & Research Laboratory is state of the art facility having its own offices, logistical rooms, 100 class Quarantine area with positive pressure Laboratories, Animal Procedure room and Experimental room providing the researchers with the opportunity to make the vision of researchers a reality.

This laboratory is fully equipped with all basic research needs to carry out experimental work and manipulation, animal surgical procedures, treatment of cells with drugs with nuclear & membrane dyes, short incubation and performing isolation of cells, tissue microscopy, cell culturing, advanced behavioral monitoring systems to deal and facilitate for experimental diseased models in an exquisitely controlled environment with 100 class quarantine area & positive pressure. Strict daily monitoring (24 hours CCTV record) for biosafety is maintained as per QMS rule.

Various faculty members of the University are carrying out their sophisticated research activities. i.e.: Drug Discovery Projects, Diagnostic strategies and pre-clinical studies, Ideal for development of diseased models like Hyperlipidemia and Atherosclerosis, Immune and Inflammatory models, Pilot studies for the development of Hepatocellular carcinoma and other Immuno-compromised models and Intracellular Cell Signaling, Development Novel Anti-inflammatory agent from Natural Products, Immune-based Inflammatory Animal study models, Molecular Mechanisms of Immune & Inflammatory Diseases, Evaluation of Anticancer activities of different drugs, Stem cell research.

This facility comprises of separate Quarantine, Breeding, and Stock area for the accommodation of Genetically Modified Mice. Quarantine area is designed to keep genetically modified rodent under observations & to protect them from any pathogen and environmental contamination.

Clean Room

This unit has clean room, established with HEPA (High efficiency particulate air) filters following 99.99% efficiency to provide constant clean, turbulence free unidirectional down-flow of air removing any dust and airborne particles with 12 hours dark & light cycle with the maintenance of temperature and humidity.

Research Laboratory

The Research laboratory is highly developed carrying all basic research needs and equipped with necessary animal behavioral monitoring systems and other important research tools making the laboratory a quintessential place to conduct advanced and specialized research work.

Procedure Room

Procedure Room is for observation of animal’s behavioral, physical & metabolic activities and their physiological responses with the help of advanced monitoring systems, equipment required by the daily based diseased models.

Experimental Room

Experimental room carries all basic research tools and equipment for the isolations of cells, DNA & RNA extraction, cell culturing, microscopy and many others.

Autoclave Area

There is dedicated Autoclave area for sterilization of surgical instruments, laboratory instruments and other materials such as chemicals, glassware etc. Animal cages are also sterilized in this autoclave area.

Food Preparation Area

Rodents feed is prepared in this area. Animals are fed with palatable, non-contaminated, and nutritionally adequate food daily.

Record Keeping Area

This area is allocated for the record of animals’ health, staff record – both technical and non-technical, All SOPs relevant to the animal care and husbandry & Equipment manuals, breeding, stock, and purchase records, Minutes of institute, Animal Ethics Committee experiments conducted with the number of animals used. Death record, clinical record of sick animals and Training record of staff involved in animal activities.
