Perfusionists are considered vital members of the Cardiac surgery team; they are responsible for operating the heart-lung machine and other ancillary equipment that allows the patient to remain alive while the heart and lungs are arrested. The primary role of the perfusionist is to facilitate the surgeon with a motionless and bloodless field while operating various equipment independently to keep the patient's body parameters regular. 

Dow Institute of Medical Technology established the department of perfusion sciences in 2011; the degree offered is BSMT in Perfusion Sciences. Dow University of Health Sciences is also the pioneering institution in Pakistan to be awarded the BS four-year degree in Perfusion Sciences. The graduates from this department are currently working all over Pakistan and worldwide, such as in Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, UAE, and Oman. The graduates in BS MT Perfusion Sciences are mostly hired as Pefusionist in various hospitals across Pakistan, such as Aga Khan University Hospital, Tabba Heart Institute, National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases, Dow Institute of Cardiology, South City Hospital, Shaheed Benazir Bhutto Trauma Center, Shifa Medical, National Medical Center, Armed Forces Institute of Cardiology Rawalpindi. They can opt for the career of academicians and work as University Lecturers. Moreover, the graduates can also choose to go for higher studies abroad to pursue their master's or/and PhD and can also work as cardiovascular research scientists.
