DOW MEDICAL COLLEGE


Dow Medical College (DMC) was founded in 1945, by converting the old medical school of Hyderabad, which was originally started by Dr. Homestead in 1881. Subsequently the College was shifted to function in old N.J.V. High School Building, Karachi, at the beginning of 1946. Dr. Hemandas R. Wadhwani, the Minister of Public Health and Medicine of Sindh Government took keen interest in the establishment of this institution along with Sir Hugh Dow, then Governor of Sindh, helped in establishing this college. The college was subsequently named after him.

Introduction


Dow Medical College (DMC) stands among the oldest and premier medical colleges in Sindh. It was established in 1945. It has a highly qualified and experienced faculty who has been involved in the teaching and training of medical students since the establishment of the college. Over more than 70 years, the college has produced around 17 thousands alumni who have been serving with distinction all over the world. It has been attached to the Dr. Ruth K.M. Pfau, Civil Hospital Karachi, Pakistan’s largest teaching hospital with departments of almost all major specialties with more than 2000 bed occupancy. The students are imparted clinical teaching in this hospital.

The academic teaching is based on semester system. The five years course has been divided into 10 semesters. A new system of integrated teaching comprises of applied knowledge in which the students are taught basic subjects in the usual manner, which is later on followed by clinically oriented teaching sessions to explain the clinical application of the basic knowledge. The alumni of Dow University of Health Sciences are serving all over the world in different capacities, including senior academic positions, research scholars and clinicians.
